I haven't seen the Astra in person yet but was hoping that someone who knows a little more could tell me if it is really as small as it appears to be? I am used to driving a Vue, but was debating switching to something more efficient, and this certainly looks it.

The Astra is a medium size car....trying to find something similar in size to that from the US - Chevy Chevette is smaller, I spose the Astra is about the same as the VW Golf, and in the same class build wise.

I am researching fuel efficiency for my next car, as well. Although gas prices went down a bit in my area recently, it's still a good chunk of the weekly budget. Plus I am more aware of the need to reduce my family's carbon footprint so am even considering a hybrid as a possibility.

Fuel efficiency is part down to the driver's foot....I spose on an average run you should get around 30 mpg. If there is a diesel variant (as there is here in the UK) then fuel economy will be almost doubled at around 50-60 mpg.

Fuel efficiency is definitely increased compared to the Vue so in theory you will get more miles per gallon no matter how you drive. Not that I am advocating poor driving, I am a very cautious driver when it comes to fuel management.

Over here the Astra would be considered a compact rather than midsize. Something like the Chevy Malibu would be a midsize.

You could fit four friendly adults who like each other into the Astra. I would not want to be in the back on a long trip though. But then I am big boned.

It would also be fine (based on my experiences of the Vaxhaul Astra) for two kids in the back seat, in car seats. The limiting factor for a family would be the other space that it has-cargo space.

Its definitely on the compact side as far as size is based. We've been checking out the one parked at our local mall on weekends and its not too small for 5 teenagers to pile into (6 if you smoosh them into the backseat illegally). So I don't think it would be bad for four people or two carseats in the back if you aren't too fussy.

Good that I read this then I have issues fitting proper into smaller type cars. Though I love how many are laid out with enough elbow room Im not sure being so tall would be comfy for me in an Astra.

For a very large or tall person I would guess this isn't the car for you. There is a car in the UK-the Ford KA that is a bit Tardis like on the inside. The dash is really small, and hence there is more room inside.
