Hybrids still have a long way to go but even the current models can boost your mpg by up to 30% and reduce emissions by the same amount. Hybrids still cost more initially but you can often find some kind of tax rebate or credit to help offset this cost. I haven't actually owned a hybrid so can't comment on the performance from firsthand experience.
