nope, the torque peak is well before redline. it comes around 4300. i don't know if thats the propper shift point but if you run the car out everytime you're actually gonna loose time.

You want to stay IN the peak powerband.

Shifting at the torque peak is only going to put you there for a split second. Once you shift at 4300, it's gonna drop you to 3K or so, which puts you way outside the powerband. Horsepower does not fall radically till after about 6500rpm.

You want it so that when you shift, it drops you right back onto the peak torque. This means around 6500rpm in first, and 6400rpm or so in second and third gear.

You're correct, but you've got it mixed up. You want to ideally keep the revs between the torque peak and the horsepower peak.

92SaturnSL2 said that the HP peak is at 6500 RPM, and i'm assuming he's correct since I don't know for sure. That means redline (6500 on a DOHC) is best

The dyno of my '92 shows peak horsepower at 5950rpm (all cars are different of course). Horsepower does not start to fall radically till after about 6300rpm.

Even though 5950 is the hp peak, you can keep revving while the horsepower is high (horsepower is a function of RPM and torque), in order to have the most horsepower and torque available at your next shift.

Our torque curve is flat enough, so it's not critical to have a precise shift point, as long as you don't go outside the powerband. Suprisingly enough, peak torque on my car was about 2500rpm. I wouldn't suggest going past 6300-6500, cause that's where it really starts to lose power.
