| Aftermarket cams for DOHC Saturns? Does anyone make them? If so, how much do they cost? How do they work with a mildly ported head?

| [edit] JG [/edit]makes cams for DOHC saturns, I believe they are only for 91-98. www.saturnmotorsports.com
Also www.streetdesignauto.com, they used their cams in combination with their ported/polished head to help their 95 sc2 run a 14.4...N/A (built bottom end as well)

| I second the streetdesignauto.com site to get your cams from. I know Mike is a cool guy and his previous SC2 was in the 13's (it was a 99 SC2). His current SC2 is a 95 and its 14.4 all motor just like MD said. I'd say go for those.

| There are two models of cams available for our car that I know of, one from JG (which may have been the one that MDBLUE mentioned as being sold by SMS) and one from Gude. The JG is a relatively mild grind, so there's not too much loss of bottom end but the high rpm gain isn't quite extreme either, so basically it shifts the powerband up a little bit. The Gude set however, as tested by Saturnspeed, is very much a race cam as it makes the low rpm range virtually unuseable due to loss of vacuum. There is also some guy or another on Xtreme or Saturnspeed I think that is developing his own set of cams with a slightly more aggressive profile than the JG set, can't remember his name though. Me and Todd (TKT 13) have JG cams in our motors, Todd just got his back so it's gonna take a bit for the car to adjust to them, and my motor isn't back from Joey yet so I can't say yet how the cams affect the motor. Even when I get the motor, my opinion would be a bit skewed anyways since the motor was modified and the cams added at the same time. Todd had his motor modified first and then had the cams added later when he got his bottom end swapped. The JG's are about $400 a set, and they'll work with a ported head since both mine and Todd's motor have ported heads. You'll want to consider ignition upgrades though to help compensate for low rpm vacuum loss. Either an MSD ignition, or maybe some accel coil packs or something like that. |

| ed im going to talk to wes at sms. todd cams affected the idle and dont pull until 5k rpm (these engines are built to ruin up to 8500-9k like its nothing) now wheather he got old stock, or this is normal , or wheather its still breaking in i dunno. but his didnt come in the same box as yours (actulaly yours came in a corwer box, im sure they just used that for shipping)
as far as accel coil mpacks you guys are getting ripped, theres NOT ONE IOTA OF PROOF OF THOSE MAKING ONE TENTH of a second off any car, accels are simply coils painted yellow, now years ago when i was a youngster accel made some pretty good stuff. on todds car it wouldnt even RUN ON THE ACCELS, we pulled them ,put a stock coil pack/module set up on and wah la, fired right up albiet with a lumpy idle.
as far as anything tested by saturnspeed, wellm caveat de emptor. the guys as mechanically inclined, as well, i wont say here.
fact is he burned one of his own moderators on a auto to manual install so the kid drove all the way down here two months ago for the real mechanics to do it.

| Hey Joey what is the feasability of raising the redline way up on an LLO? Could we pull off, with internals of course, say a 7800 redline like an sr20? Man can you imagine how much better the power would be up there with even just a mild cam? |

The car is still a daily driver, and I need the bottom end power and don't really want to deal with the vacuum problems that large cams create, such as weak power brakes at low speeds.
The plan is to keep the car N/A (because it does have to be a daily driver), I'm probably going to start modding before the end of the summer with a set of cams and porting the head, and see what happens at that point.
Because I only have 1.9 liters to play with, I'm not going to nickel-and-dime it away with BS mods like CAI's and catbacks. I figure a '92 header coupled to the stock resonator with no cat (and no muffler) should work fine for an exhaust, and I don't think I'll have a problem rigging some kind of freer-flowing air intake. I'll probably send my stock intake to ExtrudeHone if that's financially feasable while the head is off later.
