Default Am I crazy?! (possibility of Northstar engine swap)...

There's a guy I work with at my main job who's a real engine nut..he's got a '92 Camaro 25th Anniv. with around 1100 HP w/out Nitrous. Anyway, he's been interested in my car since I started the initial project, and he made the suggestion during the winter to drop a 32-valve Northstar engine from a Cadillac in my car! I got hit with taxes, so the EcoTec swap can't go down right now, but when he ran over all the specs of the car once the Northstar swap went down, it got me interested (around 400 HP w/out being Supercharged), even though it's a ton of work to the engine bay and transmission.

DO IT!!!!!

It'll physically fit, and it has a small, yet very potent, aftermarket, with everything from cams to massive roots blowers for dragster set ups.

You're gonna wanna look for a '95-'99 300HP VIN 9 (Hollander 6146B or D). The heads provide great intake/exhaust flow ratio, a hotter ignition, and a strong bottom end. The STS "big cam" is the 300 HP version, but the standard Northstar offers more torque under 5K RPM.

AVOID the 00+. Heads aren't as good, bottom end isn't as strong, massive engine management/snesor changes, and the new valvetrain isn't very accepting of most aftermerket parts.

This sucker's lightweight, compact, DOHC, aluminum, and there's tons of 'em for a decent price, but the small displacement means you're gonna want some power adders to keep up with the big boys, and SOME BLOCKS have porosity problems which can cause head bolt failure.

Low milage, harness/computer will cost ya around $2.5K, $2K for the engine alone.

Cadillac HotRod fabricators (CHR) makes custom headers for any application, as well as custom valve/front covers. On top of that, they make dry-sump oiling systems!

Armstrong Race Engineering also provides a dry-sump oiling system if you're so inclined to get that fancy.

MechTech provides cutom wiring harnesses anc computers, offering complete engine management systems and terminated wiring harnesses based on a Haltech E6X computer. They also offer U-weld header (you make 'em) kits, as well as twin turbo and eaton 112 blower kits.

If you wanna go with a carb (don't know why you would....), you can get a Holley-carb intake from CHR, used with a Holley or Electromtive standalone ignition.

BOUT TIME YOU LOOK AT THAT ENGINE BAY!!

maaan that sounds AWESOME! that sounds like THE ultimate sleeper of all time. If you can quiet the V8 growl somewhat, you can smoke every poser who doesn't see it coming.

This sounds more fun than my "Camry from Hell" idea, my RB26DETT Datsun idea, or Twin Turbo Passat W8 with 1.8L emblems and appearance packages.appearances

He'll tell you once you do the Northstar.

I'm pulling all my info from the lates Hot Rod mag, by the way, junkyard jewls. They've got stuff for RWD trannies, bellhousing adaptors and the like, for both manuals and autos, and what'll fit behind 'em.

Cage it and tunnel it

I don't know if it's possible. The engine may fit in the engine bay when you measure it, but what about tranny, axles, computer, all other components, etc. Those NorthStar motors are tight fits in the Caddys as it is.

With enough time and money anything is possible, but I doubt this one will be worth it.
