I haven't really heard anything bad about Mazda's, but I've never been a big Ford fan (Mazda = Ford in Asian clothing). If your parents refuse to get an Ion, see if they'll go for a Cobalt, Cavalier, or Sunfire. The Ecotec motor is really nice, so far it's been proven as a reliable import killer type engine.

If they insist on an import, go Lexus, Toyota, Acura, or Honda. I'd personally stay away from Kia, Hyundai, Daewoo and so on...

Your parents must be rich... Either that or they don't know that used cars are typically a much better buy considering how automobiles depreciate so quickly...

I'd say check out AutoTrader or AutoExtra and find yourself a nice fully loaded 98+ Saturn S-Series if you liked what you had.

Sorry Solar, but I thought the Carmax site sucked... They don't even have a Phoenix store! On top of that, they're prices were outrageous, even on the 97's/98's...

Well i jsut say carmax cause there's a few in the LA/Riverside area, plus i had a 03 Tacoma listed for 18,000 they gave me 20,165 for it, so i love them for the overhead but i almost picked up a 99 sc2 black, fully loaded but decided i didn't want payments so i have $$ to play with on my wagon

New cars are nice & all, but such a waste of money. They lose enough value in their first year that if you bought a 1 year old car and had to put a new engine in it, you'd still probably be cheaper than the new car. A friend of mine was looking at an '02 Mercedes CLK, which was originally like $70,000, and the dealership was asking $40,000, then dropped the price down to $30,000. 3 years old, and more than half the value is GONE. Same thing happens with any vehicle. I've seen perfectly good '02 SC2s sell for under $6,000 - they were worth between 2 and 3 times that much new!

I find it humorous that people think that buying a new car means never having problems, too. Last I knew, Toyota had the fewest in-warranty repairs, and they STILL had to do SOMETHING to like 17% of their vehicles within the warranty period. I'd stay away from the german imports, personally, because while they are designed very well, they have more manufacturing defects than most american cars (which typically have more than japanese cars), and they cost more to repair. My friend won't be buying that mercedes, simply because cost of maintenance and repair is stupidly high. For example, tires are about $700 - APIECE.

Ok, I'm done ranting. Warning: ranting may flare up again at any time.

I'd reccomend looking into a scion tC. I drive them at work all day and they are really nice cars with a very good price tag, they arent made cheap either. The new red special edition color is awesome. Plenty of factory upgrades to mess with or go with none if you wanna do your own stuff. Plus its got some kick in the 2.4 engine. Its the same engine thats in the 4cyl camrys.

As far as mazdas, i really cant help you there, i do know one thing though, i really like the mazda6!

mazda's are very good cars, as for the mazda3's they got good kick and are a hoot to drive.they have fairly good aftermarket support and you wont be disapointed with it. but my advice is buy a slighty used car. just a coupple years old. you'll save so much money and still have a reliable car.
