| attn: anyone good with computers... Ok, I mentioned a while back that my computer was messed up. One day my house, or something connected to my house was hit by lightning. Ne way, it fried my ethernet connection. I went and got a new pci ethernet card and my computer rejected it. I needed to get a router so i can connect my pc and my moms to the internet. A router only uses ethernet connection. And my pc can only conect to the internet now through usb. I found a device that plugs into my usb slot and on the other end plugs into an ethernet line. The only problem with that, is its not fully compatible with windows xp. It screwed up my pc and allowed it to get up to 18 viruses a week. Well, I've reset my pc to factory condition and reinstalled everything the way i want it. I'm still using usb to connect directly to my modem, and my moms pc (isn't used much anyway) is w/out right now. I need to know if someone can find a router (or similar) that uses usb instead of ethernet. Does such a device exist and where can i get one? I'd much rather go this way then replacing the mother board. By doing so, I can take my existing router to my gf's house and use it to connect her mom's pc and her xbox to the internet. Thanx for the help.

| Well, there's quite a few things that you want to address here, Ill tackle the most important.
First, an internet connection cannot cause you viruses, it is the lack of proper firewall and antivirus software. Your router should have a built-in fw anyways. Get some free Av from AVG www.grisoft.com.
Second, invest in a UPS to protect yourself from lightning strikes in the future, make sure that EVERYTHING they plugs inot that PC goes thru the UPS first or lightning can bypass whats not protected.
Third, I assume that you either have a built-in ethernet card or a PCI card. As Zorminster sez, if your current ethernet connector is hosed, go out and buy a new PCI card and try that. It'll set ya back about $15. You can use a USB connection but then thats a bit more complicated and not always reliable.
Alternately, you can use a USB connection on XP to share internet between computers, but yhe primary PC must be already connected to the internet first.
Whaddya mean by "it rejected it"? Compooters dont reject stuff, it either works or it dont work, sounds like either your new card was not XP compatible or you dont have thr proper drivers for your NIC. You'll need to download the latest drivers from the NIC mfg website. That should work for you.
Linksys does have a USB capable modem, not a router, but maybe you can use a USB hub? http://www.linksys.com/Products/prod...id=448&scid=29
Best of luck with that.

| dont listen to any of those guys all you need is a wireless router... you just set up the router put the wireless cards (which are all windows xp compatble) in both pcs and set them up using the instructions provided. BAM!!! both of your computers now have broadband wirelessly. D-Link, Netgear, Microsoft.Net, and Linksys are all good wireless brands. i have a Linksys wireless router so if you get one of those i can help you out with it.

Best of luck with that. | the usb to ethernet device i used did allow viruses. during isntallation it says may cause other programs to malfunction. And it did. didn't have a problem until I used it. Tried the pci slots, all of them. It either works or it don't....NO ****. It didn't, therefore it was rejected. Damn, now I know why malice acts like this most times. The lightning strike only effected the cable. Already tried running that on a surge protector, those devices slow down internet service.
utahraptor78..
u can get internet service through usb. Been doin it for almost 6 months. The cable modems have usb or ethernet connections on the back. What I'm looking for is a router, or hub that allows the use of usb to multiple computers. In other words, I want to go from my modem to the router/hub and then using usb ports, to my pc and my moms. The reason I'm posting this is b/c I can't find one. The reason I went into detail about the problem is b/c someone was bound to ask me why I'm looking for it.

| Ayep, go with the wireless. If you can put your mom's computer near your modem then you can hook her's up to the router using ethernet, then buy a wireless network adapter which you can hook up to your computer using a USB cable. This set up should run about $100. You could also buy an adapter for your mom's comp. if you wanted then you would both be wireless and both use USB it'd just cost more. I personally use Linksys from Wal-mart and works just fine.

| yea . . . go with wireless, as long as the computer is NEAR the wireless access point. i sell so many wireless access points that get returned because the customer thought it would work all throughout their house. if your computer is "rejecting" cards then one of two things is up: your motherboard fried (if your network card fried, it IS connected to your motherboard you know . . .) so try hooking it up to a different pci slot. hopefully all that fried was the one slot. if it doesn't work in any slot, try a different card. if nothing works, then it's your mobo. your nic NOR your router are giving you virii. you need to get yourself adaware to protect yourself from adware. and also get yourself a retail copy of norton antivirus. my opinion, that's the best one. those two are all I need to get rid of virii and adware. also, disable messenger in your services if you're running xp home or pro. (start settings control panel administrative tools services messenger disable)
this should take care of any problems. |
