Default AVATAR!?

Ok I have tried and tried but how do you get this thing to work. If I cant just load a pic off of my c: drive then how. Everytime I paste in a link from a webpage it just gives me that stupid red X. I know this has probabaly already come up before and for this Im sorry but please help me out.
