Whether you're a fan or not, it was still the biggest selling and longest running car line ever produced.
Think about it: the first production models rolled off an assembly line in 1933, and the car has remained essentially unchanged. Sure, there have been upgrades as the years went by, but the basic car, and engine have remained fundamentally stable.
I'd say that's a sign that it was a pretty good car.
The New Beetle, on the other hand, is just a rebodied Golf. Not all that impressive.
