The 99-1/2 and 2000 models did have a few issues, all the later MK4's had none of these issues that I know of.
1) mass air flow sensor...replace it asap
2) coil packs...replace all at the same time asap
3) try and get one with manual windows (the regulators break easily)
4) turn signal blinker (stops blinking in high heat situations like being in phoenix)
All of these are minor issues considering it was a brand new design, just about any new car design has bugs to work out. All of the things I listed are covered under recall and will not cost you a dime to replace. |

there's nothing wrong with MKIV VW's, especially if you get 03 and newer.
