Mk4 are not that bad, I had a 2000 VR6 that I acquired from my wife when we purchased her 325i. I have since traded it for a 2007 Grand Vitara only because it had 230,000 miles on it and I wanted something with a warantee.

The 99-1/2 and 2000 models did have a few issues, all the later MK4's had none of these issues that I know of.

1) mass air flow sensor...replace it asap
2) coil packs...replace all at the same time asap
3) try and get one with manual windows (the regulators break easily)
4) turn signal blinker (stops blinking in high heat situations like being in phoenix)

All of these are minor issues considering it was a brand new design, just about any new car design has bugs to work out. All of the things I listed are covered under recall and will not cost you a dime to replace.

wow funny, I posted something very similar and longer and it was deleted

there's nothing wrong with MKIV VW's, especially if you get 03 and newer.
