Default lookin for a new car

so im lookin for another car. I'm gonna sell both satty's and pick up 1 car to get back and forth. Im going off to school in PA next year (its 5 1/2 hours from home) so i'll need something reliable. I love my satty.. but i dont trust it to move with me, seeing as how i wont have any tools and stuff.

I'm looking at a BMW 323, 325, and 328. Within the e36 body style (preferrably 1995-1999)

I'm also looking at a late 90's, early 00's Volkswagen Jetta. I found one on eBay with a VR6 motor and stuff... leather, 5-speed.. you get it.

Which one would you guys look at if you had to choose?

Good luck selling a 95 for $3k. Not going to happen.

If you're going with a Vdub, get a 2000+ 1.8t. The VR6's are slow.

rwd

I wouldn't get a 4th gen jetta, or any mk4 in general. They're not the best.

2002+ 1.8T. That was the year they changed the rating from 150HP to 180 HP.
Also, in 2002, there were both 12 valve and 24 valve VR6 engines, the 12 valve (IIRC) was rated at 175HP, and the 24 valve was rated at 200HP.

Anyway, I heard that the VW MK4 Jetta was not exactly reliable. I certainly see lots of VW cars leaking oil. That in mind, I certainly see lots of people putting conventional 5w30 or 10w30 in an engine that needs synthetic 5w40.

German cars can be a real pain with all their odd parts under the hood. If they didn't out-handle Japanese and American cars by such a margin, and weren't so comfortable, I doubt you'd look at one.

mk4s suffer from too many problems to warrant purchasing one. And running regular oil in one will result in a gunked and oil starved engine
