| Mazda to buy back underpowered RX-8's from owners! Get this...this is an article in the new Lowrider Edge (formerly "euro")...
"Mazda is offering to buy back most of the 3,551 RX-8 rotary-engine sports cars sold since the July launch because engine power is as much as 5-percent less than advertised--an important difference to sports car enthusiasts. The flub interrupts an important rollout of models designed to restore Mazda's image as innovative and sporty. But the company's quick action is expected to prevent too much damage to Mazda's reputation. Mazda sent out letters on 8/22/03 to RX-8 buyers saying it would pay full sticker price plus taxes and other fees--regardless of the mileage on the cars. Those who tell Mazda that they choose to keep the cars get free scheduled maintence for the 4-yr/50,000 mile warranty period, plus $500. Buyers who don't contact Mazda get nothing"
How's that for customer service?! |

| ^^yeah, I thought it was, but I didn't know if anyone else heard of it.
RiceRocket: I don't think it's a dumb screw up..a lot of companies overrate their cars, or they don't meet their projections when it's produced, but none have went to this extreme..usually they offer $500-$1000 or free maintenance until you get rid of the car, but never offer to buy it back. Hell, if it were a "Saturn", they'd tell you to shut the **** up and give you a coupon for a free car wash or somethin |

| Mazda did this a few years ago, when they over-rated the Miata.

| This happens with pretty much all manufacturers, but at least Mazda has had the honor to stand up and admit it.
The SAE is now reviewing how horsepower ratings are achieved, and they are going to issue new standards that all manufacturers have to comply to if they wish to advertise their horsepower ratings.
The current system allows for +/-2%, but it's not very accurate. The new system will set a standard of the same 2%, but will be more true to life.

| Eh... I didn't think those power figures were too accurate to begin with. The few times I test drove an 8, I wasn't even remotely impressed with it's power.
I'm glad that Mazda has decided to take this approach, but I don't think many owners are going to sell their cars back. 8 buyers typically purchase for image, and that's it. I don't believe many of them will be too concerned with this issue.
Okay, there's my two cents. |

WANKEL ALL THE WAY BABY | I had a better idea. Turbocharge the Renesis.
The real reason the RX-8 doesn't feel powerful is the low torque. Remember the Honda S2000?
RX-8 250 HP/163 FT/LB
S2000 240HP/155 FT/LB
Both cars rev to about Nine Grand.
