Default Microsoft Hearts question

Ok I'm sitting here playing Microsoft hearts... the game that comes on all computers now.... Anyways I never noticed it before but by the other 3 players they each have 3 little white dots above 3 cards... What's the white dot for?

no actually it's only in the beginning when you trade cards.... it's the three cards they're getting rid of
