Default not your typical clicking/pinging noise

Just picked up a new/used 2001 SL2 and am very happy.. but noticed that both while running AND after turning the car off after the few short trips I've made in it that there's a clicking/pinging noise almost like a fan hitting something.. but I don't hear any fans running and the noise will continue for at least a full minute after turning the car off (though I haven't even had time to time it yet to see how long it will go on for).

Any ideas?

TIA
-Andrew

Welcome to the Spot.

The sound you're mentioning almost sounds like it may be part of the exhaust system contracting and expanding as the metal heats and cools.

It is your cat. I have the same car and it has done it since day 1 that I owned it.

that is normal for many cars; my 2002 saturn does it (and has since day one) don't really know why, but it's healthy (i hope)

if it was only after turning the car off, I'd say that's just the car cooling off... but with it running, that's odd
