Default Nuclear War

I found this on Yahoo! News this afternoon. Prepare yourselves. If any of you pray, I think now is the time to do so. I have someone who I love very much-after talking to his mom on Tuesday, we both think he may be near Korea, another uncertain area right now-which explains why I've had no contact with him in over a month. If any of you have loved ones overseas right now, I send my prayers to them.

Rumsfeld Won't Rule Out Nuclear Bomb Against Iraq
By Will Dunham

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld on Thursday refused to rule out the U.S. use of nuclear weapons in the possible war with Iraq, but noted atomic weapons have not been unleashed in hostilities since 1945.

"Our policy historically has been generally that we will not foreclose the possible use of nuclear weapons if attacked," Rumsfeld said at a hearing before the Senate Armed Services Committee (news - web sites).

He said the United States would not "rule out various options," but said "those weapons ... have not been fired in anger since 1945."

Rumsfeld's comments came during questioning by Sen. Edward Kennedy, a Massachusetts Democrat, who expressed alarm that the Bush administration may be considering lowering the threshold for possible use of nuclear weapons.

"As you well understand, the nuclear weapon is not just another weapon in an arsenal. And until now we've always kept them in a class of their own for good reason because of the enormous destructive power and our profound commitment to do all we can to see that they are never used again," Kennedy said.

Rumsfeld said, "Does the (Defense) department have an obligation and have they in successive administrations of both political parties had procedures whereby we would conceivably use nuclear weapons? Yes."

Kennedy then asked whether the United States was "seriously considering using any nuclear weapons against Iraq?"

"The only person in the United States who has the power to use weapons of that nature is the president of the United States," the defense secretary responded. "It seems to me that if one looks at our record, we went through the Korean War, we went through the Vietnam War, we've gone through the war on terror and we've not used nuclear weapons. That ought to say something about the threshold with respect to nuclear weapons."

Rumsfeld added, "We have every confidence that in the event force is to be used in Iraq that we can do what needs to be done using conventional capabilities."

The only use of nuclear weapons in wartime came in August 1945 when the United States used atomic bombs against two Japanese cities, Hiroshima and Nagasaki, during World War II.

The United States is assembling a large military force in the Gulf region for a possible war with Iraq.

President Bush (news - web sites) has said the United States will lead a coalition to topple Saddam Hussein (news - web sites) if the Iraqi president fails to comply with U.N. resolutions requiring him to give up any weapons of mass destruction.

Iraq denies possessing such arms.

brenda no offense to you or anyone else. I just feel that we are dwelling too much upon the whole situation, only because we're still in this "talking stage". yes it's scarey, but there's nothing we can do right now. whatever is gonna happen will happen, we can't rush it and we can't prevent it, it's just the way life is. I don't watch the news because of it. all you hear is more argueing over why we should go to war or why we shouldn't. Who wants to live their life watching stuff that makes them miserable? I don't. I want to enjoy my life for however long it may be. We have to live life to the fullest and making ourselves miserable isn't doing that at all.

Sorry just wanted to put my 02 cents in.

Em~ I understand you dont' mean any offense from it-but it's much different looking on it in your perspective. As far as I know-you don't have anyone particulary close to you in the armed forces.
As much as I don't like to dwell on what's going on overseas, I can't NOT dwell on it because the man I love is over there and I have no clue what's become of his situation. I'm not going to deny what's going on because it's more a part of my life than I'd like it to be. And to many people on here, it's a part of their life as well. Rather keep people updated than in the dark about the REALITY of where the US stands right now.

I understand the over-reaction with people buying their "life supplies" because of LIVING IN FEAR-I'm living in fear FOR people I love. But I still go on with my life and I'm enjoying it so much right now. I can't remember a time in my life when I've had so much fun! But I think too many don't face reality. They're thinking we're going to avoid war-I don't think that's going to happen at all.

the problem is the media. they tell people to live normal lives then they go on and on about these issues. all i'm saying is that I don't think the media needs to cover so much of it, maybe just the major issues and that's it. and again no offense, but posting ten milllion threads about the war on here ISN"T helping it out either.

i dont know about yall but i can't live a normal life if everything i read or see has to do with IRAQ and North Korea. all i'm asking is from now on not to post any other "DEPRESSING WAR" threads. at least not till something actually happens.
