| saturn thinking about buying well actually its a 96 SC1 I think. It has the twin cam so I'm guessing that it is the SC1 and not SC2. I have a question tho, Is the gear shift suppose to be really sloppy? I haven't bought the car yet because of the gear shift. I need to know before I buy the car. The gear shifter is really "loose" as in I put it in first and you that flop and move the stick all around while its in first. All the gears are like that. I thought the civic had a lot of play in it but dang. Is this normal? Other than that the car is awesome. everything else works great. the pop up light make a funny noise tho. a bad clicking noise that goes on for about 10 sec after the lights go up or down. The dealer should be able to fix that. Lastly is this a good car? Is it easy to mod? Thanks for all your help.

| twincam usually equals an Sx 2
yes, easy to mod, they make everything for that car and motor, and as for the sloppy shifter, the one in my cousin's '94 Sc2 was sloppy like that, but it turns out she broke something... so yeah...
buy it and see if it breaks. hope ya do, saturns are fun.
singlecam auto's suck though.
and as seeing as this is your first post, welcome to the spot.

| At the bottom of the shifter there's a black grommet, see if that's giving away...
Seeing as you're talking about the pop-uphead lamps, that means you have the Saturn SC2, 1.9l Twin Cam. Yes though, both our saturns have quite a bit of play in em, and they're harder to shift when compared to a Civic. But the shifter cables may be worn, or the grommet at the bottom, look into it...as for the noise with the motor...that can probably be fixed.
To answer your other question, Yes, It's a reliable car, as any other would be, if you keep up on maintenance...my 93SL2m has well over 160k miles, as my 97sl2m has 120k miles. There are some that are wayyy over 300K. As for modifying, there is not the same after market support as the Civics, Integras, Sentras, and other Imports...You have less of a selection, thus a higher price...Supply and demand...

| yes, also check the . . . oh **** what are they called . . . bushings i think? i know my buddy replaced his bushings and it helped his shifter out some. he's got an older civic and i could've sworn i had it in neutral . . . not engaged.
as far as aftermarket; impulse is right. there definitely is not as high of an aftermarket for saturn as there is honda / mitsu. if you're looking to do something different saturn might be the way to go; but if you're looking for a selection of body kits, there's like 4.
you will get a lot of **** from people that just don't know anything about saturns (little honda kids) if you go with a saturn. but keep in mind that saturn is the only community i could find like this. i've never found forums and whatnot specifically for a certain car that is actually helpful. i've gotten a lot of help from the spot; no other forum has been helpful for me. i joined a forum for honda because i was interested in getting a prelude, but i couldn't stand those guys. all they did was flame left and right.
you need to buy a car based on what you want, what you want to do with it, how much you want to spend to do it, and how much you can stand the community you'll be in.

| What he said^^
Saturn's moto is actually very ture: it's different in a Saturn. The Saturn performance community is much different than any other Honduh ricer group of people. The aftermarket support is not huge but there enough. If all you want to do is call up Ling Long's World Of Rice or any shop in town, order a part and bolt it on (what mean this "bolt on"?) the next day, get a Honda. If you don't mind buying some pipe (or ordering parts online) and making your own that will work just as well if not better, get the Satty. You want an intake for a Honda you have about 40 choices, you want an intake for a Satty you got about 5 and I can name all of them. However a CAI will make about 7hp on a HonDUH and 12hp on the Saturn. There is no replacement for displacement and you learn that fast if you buy the car. My car may only have 100hp stock but the 114lbs/ft @ 2,400rpm makes up for it and will smoke any Honda with 130hp and 90lb/ft @ 7,000rpm. They're as good on gas as any compact car and just as reliable. Only problem that most people complain about is oil burning. Some people go through a quart ever other week, some don't burn any (I've used about a quart in the last 4 months).
Just make SURE its a DOHC. I was told mine was a DOHC and never thought read the valve cover..... go ahead and laugh. SC1= SOHC SC2= DOHC There is no DOHC SC1 unless it was swaped.

| Oh yea. And compared to most other compact cars they're mad easy to work on because there's plenty of room in the engine bay, everything is easy to reach, everything is electronic (almost no vacuum lines), and they have DIS so you don't have to worry about those garbage distributors and timing.

| I have yet to see a FWD car with a manual that doesn't have at least some play like you describe. It's normal for that play to get greater and greater as mileage increases.
What I did was just cut the shifter. It shortened the throw a bit and eliminated some, but not all, of the slop.

I personally think that the SC2's are great..and there's nothing better than when you don't know how to do something, you just visit the Spot, lay your question out on the keyboard, come back an hour later, and there's your answer. The guys (and girls) here are great, and can be a huge help. Although I have to admit, they're all making me pretty lazy..."Hmm...how do I air up my tire? I'll just ask the Spot "
Not only that, but it's kinda nice that you can be a little original. I think I've saw one other hyped up Saturn around here, and like 50 civics. Yeah the parts selection might not be the greatest, but to me it's worth it in the long run.
