| Mike,
It doesn't seem like it was a year ago when it happened... The sting from it is still felt.
I was still in bed when the first plane hit. Now, when I'm sleeping, there's not going to be much to wake me up, but when my former room-mate barged in and said the World Trade Center was hit by a plane, I honestly thought it was a sick joke, so I rolled back over and dozed for a few more minutes. I couldn't sleep after that, so I got up and took my shower, got dressed, and got ready for work... I walked out into the living room to see, on live national television, the first tower collapse, and the second one burning from the second airliner hitting it. I stood there, in total shock as it happened. When I got to work, the entire shop was at a standstill because everyone was glued to the TV's... Myself, I was even more of a wreck when I remembered that a friend of mine worked in Tower 1. For close to 3 hours, I tried, without sucess, to get a hold of him. By the end of that third hour, I was frantic... Thankfully, I did hear from him sooonafter. Apparently, he had the day off, so he was nowhere near work, but from where he lived, he had a good view. Even after that, I couldn't help but cry for what had happened... That night, as I drove to my fiancee's house, I kept the news on the stereo, and cried the entire way to her house. When I got there, all of our friends were there, and all were crying. That day affected everyone. Mike, when 9/11/02 comes, I'll be thanking the good Lord for what we all have, and I'll be remembering the brave Officers and men of the NYPD and FDNY, who gave their lives in the defense of human life. I'll remember the lives lost in the towers, and their innocence lost in those swooping blows. I'll remember the innocent lives lost on the liners, hijacked by cowards, and used to plunge this country of ours into the war we are in now. I'll remember the spirit of America, long thought to have been lost in the decades, rush back to life and show the world, and each of us, that this great nation of ours can rise from the ashes and carry on.
But, through all of this, I'll always remember 9/11 as the day of death, the day of new life, and the day that the United States of America sharpened her talons, once again, to insure us the ultimate victory over terror.
To those who wish to harn us and this country; we WILL find you, and when we do, it's my hope that whatever God you believe in has mercy on your souls because no one else on Earth will.
