| It is a trick that corn farmers are using in order to raise demand for their product, and raise prices. They made deals with the US government to reduce taxes on ethanol fuel, while keeping up the tax on regular gasoline. That is the only reason the price is lower. E20 or E85 fuel is really NOT a bargain.
So many people try to do good for the environment, while at the same time, many people just claim their product is environmentally good to make money. If anybody tells you that science has proven something to be an environmental blessing or curse, DEMAND repeatable experiments, as that is what science is about.
I could go off into a tangent about CFC, CO2, and other global warming "science" but that is for another thread.
EDIT: +1

| Other suggestions for lessening dependence upon foreign oil? Aside from waiting on fuel cells, if they pan out...
Frankly, the extra demand for corn is a good thing, IMO, since the government has been paying farmers NOT to farm for years - enough demand to end that would be a wonderful thing, IMO. Also, corn farmers likely aren't getting rich off this this year anyway - way too much corn was planted, and it looks like it's going to be a good crop. Supply & demand says that the resulting overproduction of corn is going to kill prices, and put farmers right back to where they were. And it's not like farmers are big money-makers. |

They way i look at it, By us using the corn, in turn the cows stop eating as much, beef prices go up as well as milk and any other by product. Another solution that the government refuses to look at is hemp. We can produce enough of that to support everything. But an individual person cant stop any of this from happening. But like you said, they did overplant corn this year so maybe that will help. |

| I guess I don't see a problem with tacking twenty cents per pound onto a few goods in order to not fund the middle east (and thus not motivate wars over there, terrorists, whatever).
I pretty much agree with the hemp thing - it should be legal, though accompanied with some way to make sure that it's not being used to hide pot. |

Planting crops every season takes nutrients out of the soil, no nutrients = no crops. The government paying farmers not to plant crops is to help the farmers make a livelihood and keep that livelihood going over many years... I could go more into this, but this isn't the right place.
As for ethanol in gas, I think its a good idea FOR NOW, helps the farmers, reduces our dependence on foreign nations, blah blah blah. BUT the idea that its better for the environment is absurd and companies that use ethanol and car manufacturers that make ethanol-friendly cars need to stop advertising ethanol as some miracle that will end global warming.
edit: eye no speel gud
