Default Take a Penny, Leave a Penny Etiquette

OK......Here is something that alot of stores offer to people if you need a FEW pennies. Take notice I said "a FEW pennies"! This is where my question comes into play. As alot of you guys know, I own my own candle and gift shop, www.clarkscreekcandle.com (shameless plug, sorry!). Well....I had a customer who came into my store and bought a few candles, plush bears and some other things. The customers total came out to something like $45.14. She gave me two 20's and a five and proceeds to dig into the penny cup I have on the counter to pick out 14 pennies. I know this should not bug me because I am offering FREE pennies to people who don't want to break that nickle or dime, but don't you think 14 pennies is just way to FREEKING many!?!?!

I refuse to take a penny, I view it as a sign of weakness. I go so far as wanting to completely abolish welfare, medicare and any other social program .

I think that if it is only a few cents as in 4-5 cents. I understand that people don't have a couple cents sometimes but taking money to completely pay the cent baggage is wrong. What if the next person needs .02?

I don't either. I feel that if you went in there to buy a product, and you don't have the money for it, you shouldn't buy it.

i think max is 4. You shouldnt take as many or more than can make up another denomination. i.e. 5cents is a nickel so you dont need that much. Now if people throw nickels, dimes, and quarters in your penny cup(ive seen it many times) then i dont see a problem in taking one or two coins(nickel or greater) if needed.

Amen

The only time I do it is if the guy at the counter takes some to make change easier.....but I'm still paying full price so that doesn't even count.
