I am at the same crossroads. I am getting close to 100k, I consume about 2 qts of oil every 1000 miles. My power is good, however, the engine isn't right.

I want to replace all the internal and external wear items at once and then I can have a 0 mile drivetrain and follow regular maintenance schedules instead of going 'well it's 50k for this and 20k for that and 30k for the other thing'....

buying a bare block is good, and a head, but I would also want low mileage crank, cams, all the other expensive wearable items.

Once I am done I will do a write up. I am debating the turbo vs high compression setup.

The high compression setup may give you a happy face for a while, but if do a turbo setup right you could push 12-14 psi on the high side and be waaay happier for a little more cash. Just a suggestion.

That little more cash, comes out to the price of the turbo, esp if running 6+psi...the strong NA bottom end turbo are identical save the pistons.

You wouldn't go for forged rods?

maybe I'm reading this wrong, but I think he's saying a built bottom end for NA or for turbo would be the same other than the pistons for compression differences.

i wouldn't want a turbo. more problems than it's worth.

give me a high-compression satty for tooling around town and i'll be grinning plenty...

i may talk to joe about getting another engine, and doing the head work at a much later date.

but my budget just dropped, since the sedan now needs a sunroof, and a new interior.

hey joe...got anything for about $450

If you are going to rework the head go ahead with a full rebuild, in my experiance putting on a new head gasket and reworked head on a bottom end with a lot of miles will at least cause the rings to fail pretty quick, and from what I have read saturns have problems with rings anyway. I have never rebuilt a saturn engine so I could be dead wrong, just thought I would throw in my 2 cents.

I'd have to second the suggestion for a built bottom end; but then again, I may be biased, mine has hole in it. Grrrrrrrrrrr.... I hate the Buick.
