I would also recommend using hastings piston rings, also very good and cheap ($30 from manf.).
DO NOT, UNDER ANY CIRCUMSTANCES, USE HASTINGS RINGS!!!!!

THAT'S why many Saturn engines burn oil in the first place. If you rebuild your engine with Hastings rings you run the same risk as you did from the factory of getting an oil burner, since Saturn used these rings stock.

As to your questions, I would definitly have a look at the bottom. If I were you I wouldn't just hone it and slap new rings in it either. Go however far over you need to get it true then get pistons that size. Besides, its not extremely difficult to pull the engine, and its a lot easier to work on on the engine stand then in the car. What I would do is pull it out, look it over, get a quote from the machine shop. Then compare what it'll cost at the machine shop with what it'll cost to get an engine from Joey. If you go the machine shop route don't let them use Hastings rings, get Sealed Powers or anything else.

Oh yeah, about the high compression, I run about 10:1 on 87 octane pump gas with no trouble(a little combustion chamber welding and head surfacing). Roughly the same gas mileage I had previously.

I only have a few passes on the new engine(and there was a big headwind and bad weather to boot) so I really don't know for sure, but it looks promising, went a .24 with the headwind that was slowing down our real race car quite a bit, and it would only affect me more.

I have gone a previous best ET of 16.160 and best MPH of 84.59; and that was basically factory stock with 150k miles on the car.

I wish someone with one of these build up saturns actually had times or a dyno run.

Try to post something when it's available.

Don't under any circamstances believe Brandit! Why would you say such a thing about Hastings rings. Do you have them? Have you seen them? They aren't like the stock ones which suck. I have used the stock ones several times and they are cheap, and can break easily. The hastings are made better and i believe produce a better seal then the stocks. If none of you knew JE pistons has hastings make their rings for them. I know several people using Hastings and love them. Some of them also run turbochargers. And this doesn't apply to just Saturns, I know others who use Hastings on their honda's.

This really ticks me off, because if there is a good product out there for us its Hastings piston rings. They are cheap ($30), and well made. I have used stocks piston rings probably about 3 times, Total Seal's 1 time, and Hastings once. And guess which one sucked them most. Total Seal with its massive blow by, and I'm not the first for this to happen using Total Seal rings. The stock are ok, but seeing that the Hastings are cheaper and better its ovious what you would by. I'm sure several people running the Hastings rings will back me up on this too. If you don't want to run Hastings I would say the next best thing would be Speed Pro. And if you still don't know what to do ask your local speed shops and machine shops. They will know what works and what doesn't. After having problems with the Total Seals I talked to a knowlegable shop (Jotech Motorsports) and found they had many problems with the Total Seals also. They also recommmened the Hastings, of course that was nice to hear since I had already put them in my car.

hastings=good?

i'm comfused. i'm thinking about dropping in that '97 and rebuilding the '94 with a high compression head and whatnot, to swap back in later.

will hastings hold a 10:1 compression?

hey malice, been contemplating some work myself. i got this website of importkiller here http://www.importperformanceparts.net/
they've got hypereutectic pistons for us at $149, they've got some good prices. let me know what you decide to do since i might be going down the same road to power.
