Default hey im new to this so please help!

ok hey everyone, my name is orion and i own a 96 saturn sl2 that my grandma gladly sold me 2 years ago. i want to start modifying it and i talked to a mechanic about the exhaust , i told him i wanted to cut off the muffler and put a resonator on. he told me there is already a resonator on right behind the cat. converter, so theoretiically, can i icut off my muffler and get the same effect as cutting it off and putting on a resonator like i had planned to? i know this sounds very cheap and something that some 17 year old kid would do to make his car louder, but thats basically my situation lol. oh and im getting a ram air intake also, would that help the sounds too? thanks for the help.

your car will sound like crap if you just cut the muffler off. if you wanna go the cheap route........at least do it the right way. get 2.25" crush bent piping running from your CAT and buy an ebay muffler. that should run you between $80-$120.

Umm, it takes a little more than that. By "ram air" do you mean a cold-air intake that's located out of the engine bay or do you mean you are going to mold in a hood scoop that is connected to your intake?

wow i really need to check out ebay lol. i will run the filter right where the old air box was located. idk what you would call that. well today i took a sawzall to the exhaust pipe and cut a little notch out just behind the muffler and it has that beautful rice burner tone now. another question, how importnant is backpressure? will my car run like garbage without the backpressure? can i cut off my muffler and slap on a glass pack for a deeper richer tone that doesnt sound so damn tinny? and what is the size of the stock tail pipe, i dont have any dial calipers thanks

oh lawd - lol. heres your answer - ebay once again:
Short Ram - $6.95 + $21.99 for shipping

generic brand muffler: $6.99 + $23.00 for shipping.

after that.........go to local muffler shops and ask how much will they charge to run 2.25" crush bent piping from the CAT. seriously. thats all you need bro. its cheap as it gets.

intakes that put the filter where the stock airbox is are referred to as "warm air" or "short ram" intakes. They are often mis-labelled as cold air intakes, but are not, and they are not a true "ram air" intake.

A cold air intake places the filter outside of the engine bay to collect air that has not been warmed by the engine, and a ram air intake places the filter (or a scoop or some sort of air channel) where it is exposed to the air rushing past the car as it is driving, which results in the air being "rammed" into the intake, giving the engine a bit more air. Thus, a ram air intake is also a cold air intake.
