Oil and Transmission Coolers

I've been thinking of installing a oil cooler and a transmission cooler in my car and have two questions:

1. Will the coolers take enough oil to fill that it will reduce the usable amount of oil to the engine?

2. Where would you connect the transmission cooler? I was under the car the other day and didn't see anyplace easy to tap into.

for the tranny cooler, just use a radiator out of an automatic, it has a tranny cooler built in. as for the taps...i don't know.

and for the oil cooler, not a biggie, just figure out how much oil it takes to fill whatever system you have, then add that much extra oil.

Thanks Malice. I was thinking of adding auxillary cooling to the tranny, since I have an auto, and it seems to heat up a bit more that I would wish (not abnormal), but with the nitrous making several passes at the track I would prefer to keep the engine and transmission as cool as possible. I didn't know that the auto radiator had a tranny cooler in it though, so now I know where I can tap into the tranny fluid. Thanks.

you could prolly set up the oil cooler two different ways.

1. hook up to the oil galley on at the back of the block, then tap the oil pan for the return. like how turbo oil lines are up.

2. hook up where the oil filter is located. like how a remote oil filter kit works.

i thought you had a manual

look down at your radiator from above. on the upper right hand side (if you are in front of the car) there are two fluid lines attached to the radiator. you could interupt the lines and re-route it to a tranny cooler.

now that i know you've got an auto, it really isn't all that hard.

you might as well use a small electric fan on the tranny cooler as well.

I'm looking at one of the Perma-cool coolers with the fans attached, since with that and the two-row radiator I should still have a benefit in water-cooling as well. This is the one that I'm looking at (one for tranny and one for oil since they work for both:

from talking to a Saturn tech in Warren, MI, I asked him about trany coolers and such. He told me that tranny coolers were not necessary for our cars due to the fact they run cool, especially the transmission.But if you can fuigure out a way to add enigne or tranny coolers, I want one as well.

They may run cool when stock and street-driven, but my engine compartment gets damn hot with the header (which I am wrapping soon) and with nitrous going through at the track it will definately heat up. When I get around to getting them in, I'll definately post.

No problem. It may be awhile until I get around to it since I am in middle of several projects at this point such as machining some brackets to hold the nitrous solenoids, other brackets to route the n2o lines neatly, and working on my dash, not to mention the exhaust overhaul, but I'll be sure to post a step-by-step howto for the coolers.
