These give hope to the RWD concept, but I'll continue the search!
Here is a thread that references the rock crawler shown below (Saturn 1.9Liter to a Toyota tranny.) The guy goes by Scott@Rockstomper. (NOTE: that he makes reference to the light-weightedness of the Saturn motor, when compared to the Toyota. Perhaps the 1.9 would work out well as an autocrosser motor in a RWD.)

May be difficult with this particular tranny (judging by his comments,) but then how could it be so easy with a VW transaxle (see link: http://www.kennedyeng.com/vw_por.htm ) that can be adapted to RWD motors as well as other FWD motors? There is surely something out there that can better match the 1.9 Liter Saturn motor.
