Default after market throttle bodies any good

ive done a few small mods to my 97 sl2 and ive been lookin at these big bore throttle bodies. They claim to make up to 14hp and that sounds pretty good to me but i was just wondering if anyone has any expierience with them and if they really do make a difference.

You can get, or make, a home made one. But it uses the stock throttle plate, so the bottleneck is the same as the stock one. The one I bought has an enlarged plate, so it doesn’t have the same restriction as the stock or home made ones. With that said, I still don’t believe that I am getting anywhere near +14HP nor will any of them net those kind of numbers. I am happy with mine and like it a lot. Just don’t expect to be beating Lamborghini’s with it.

no actually, the restriction isn't the same. I do them by hand for people and vms machines them for a lower price than retailers. I use the venturi principle as I'm sure he does as well, to increase velocity as it passes through the throttle body. sure, the LL0 could use a larger plate area as well, but you will get a gain from just the funnel port design that a lot of online walk-thru's show.

as a matter of fact, I think I'm going to start sending people his way for units as I'm way too busy with other stuff, and for 50 bucks that's a hell of a deal for something done properly.

for the money, the SPS unit is the best one I've seen on the market, aside from fitting one from an entirely different car (such as from a geo storm, or the few who are boosted running an LS1 throttle body)

Do you believe that a TB upgrade, buy you, hand made, or from a store, will give +14HP tho?

maybe... combined with a good intake and exhaust setup... the overall gain might be in that range... but the TB alone won't.

no, I would highly doubt that, I never said it would. that to me sounds like a pretty inflated number.

it would honestly be hard to say since it depends how much more efficient it is and what else has been done to the car.

one some that have many modifications, possibly, but not in stock trim no.

It's going to increase the throttle response before it increases power.

Thats what I have noticed the most from my VSM'ed throttle body, that and the cool hissing sound it makes when the throttle is about 1/8th open. I definately can feel teh diffrence in the top end as well. This may be because im a SOHC, but the first time I put it on, it really made me grin. My car doesnt fall AS flat on its face as it used to in the top of 3rd through 4th...

There is no reason why a SOHC auto should make you grin...
