Springs seem to have the reputation of better ride over the coilovers.

I have coilovers on my SL1. I'll give you the +/- for getting coilovers.

+Agressive Look "Make your car look mean"
- Harder Ride "Bumps hurt when you hit them"
+ Better Control "I can go around corner a lot faster without my tires"
(I have a sturut bar too which helps also)
- Sometimes you will have a very bounce ride "Car bounces can be fun a times"
+ Low Profile Tires and 17'' rims "Looks very nice with coilovers"

I love my coilovers they are a performance mod and a visual mod which make them even better.

Stiff shocks and struts will allways be a better choice over coilovers. You can get 2.5" drop sprint springs from SPS for $160.

any time you drop a car, you will have a stiffer more rigid ride, you can't escape that. But, you can choose the stiffness of springs, but not for coilovers. If you are in it for the long run (performance, quality, longevity) go for springs and if you can afford it, get struts with them. But if you just want a cheap drop, get coilovers, but your ride will suffer, and I wouldn't recommend being too hard on them...
