Diesel technology has been getting a lot better though within the past 10 years as being less pollutant. In fact, diesel fuel has higher energy content than gasoline, and diesel performance is usually better in terms of engine output. This means diesel puts less global-warming pollution into the air, though there are other factors to consider in air pollution as well.

Slightly off- topic, but I know of atleast a few Saturn diesels exist. I used to work for a mail order parts company that dealt specifically with VW/Audi. We had a government contract company come into our shop on a few occasions in a time period of say about a year and a half. They purchased a total of 9 brand-new in the crate Audi 5-cylinder TDI engines (I sold 2 of the engines to them myself). My manager and I we curious as to why these guys bought so many of them, so we asked what they are using them for(we figured testing of some kind) and the people told us they were installing the engines in Saturns, for the government. Why, they wouldn't say. But I guess it just proves it is possible.

I would believe that when I saw it - engine swaps are few & far between in Saturns...
