Default Sudden power loss, trying t odiagnose

After a normal start-up, my '97 SL1 loses power and decelerates... I have to downshift to keep the engine going and eventually it dies. I can start it back up and the RPM shoots up to 3500 and the drops to an abnormally low < 1000. If I shut the car off and wait for 5 or 10 minutes, the engine will run normally for a little while before the whole cycle repeats.
Anyone have any idea what might be causing this?
