Can someone tell me if the center console from an 01 will fit in a 96?

nope - the center consoles don't swap between interior styles, which are:

'91-'94
'95-'99
'00-'02

So you need one for a '95-'99

why do you want a 3rd gen console anyway. i think the 2nd gens are a more efficient use of space
