Default painting 101?

Hi. If I were to want to paint my car a different color this summer, say from the factory ugly grey to a primer white or something, what would I need to do exactly..

call up a body shop i belive. but the best thing to do is become freinds with a guy that has a paint booth.

I can only imagine how hard a flat white car would be to keep clean.
