Default Manual Tranny removal

I have a 96 SL2 with a manual transmission and I rebuilt the engine, but pulled it without pulling the tranny. Now the tranny is all alone in the engine bay and I need to get it out for easier installation, so I am told. So what would be the best way of getting the transmission out and making the installation smooth? I have not dealt with transmission removal or drive shaft tasks on front wheel drive cars before so any help is greatly appreciated. Thanks

I believe you can find some infor using the Search button. Removal would be easiest out the top now as the engine is not there. A 30mm socket is needed to remove the bolt at the end of the driveshafts on the spindle. Then a pry bar is needed to pop the dirvers side out from the tranny. The passanger side should slide out. Draining of the fluid is needed before anything ofcourse. When prying the drivers side out, be sure not to put pressure on the metal piece around the axle as it will bend. put pressure on the tranny case instead. You will need to remove the struts and possibly the tierod end to get the axles out. Then just lift the tranny out from the bay.

It would be advised to attach the tranny to the engine and replace it as one unit. Removal of the pulley on the engine is needed however. Personally, i just drop the entire engine cradle. Makes things go much smoother

You don't have to remove the axles from the wheel end of things. You do need to take the ball joint off of the steering knuckle. The remove the axles from the trans--fluid drained already. With the ball joints lose from the knuckle you will now be able to get the axles out of the way. From there it is just remove what ever you need to to free up the trans frm the car.

As RC1488 said when you reinstall everything you want to attach the trans to the engine and slide it all back into the engine compartment as one unit.

Another question. I pulled an FNG move and forgot to put a little oil on the cylinder walls before installing the pistons, and now the engine is all assembled. Would it be better to put some oil in the cylinders through the spark plugs or something else?
