Default Pulling engine 96 SL2

On my 96 SL2 5-speed I am pulling the engine to do some refreshing. Is it better to leave the transmission attached to the motor when I pull it or not?

Manual trans is a lot easier if you pull the engine and transmission together. Makes things a lot easier on install especially.

Well my #2 piston is chipped so would it be more reasonable to get a used engine or just rebuild mine?

If you are doing a refresh on your engine then you would want to one a used engine as well. So likley the easiest way to go would be to replace the one damaged piston or all of the pistons. That is providing that the cylinders are ok. A new piston or one from a wrecking yard (bad engine with good pistons--a pick and pull that you can find one in peace annd quiet) would do you.

Have users on this forum had good luck with the DOHC Hyperutectic Pistonsfrom SDA? I was considering the pistons and rings from there, or are there better standard bore pistons than those? The site states that they have improved oiling passages, is that an answer to so many problems with burning oil in older engines?

What exaclty should I do to refresh the engine? I need new pistons for sure so... rings, timing chain, head gasket, exh. gasket, intake gasket, valve cover gasket, main seals, timing chain guides, anything else?

Unless damaged you should not need to replace the pistons.
Bearings. If the engine is out of the car connecting rod and crankshaft bearings. If the engine is not out then connecting rod bearings.
If you are going to te time and trouble odf the bottom end of the engine then the top end needs doing as well. Good idea to send the head to a machine shop for a once over. Warpage needs checking as do the valve guide clearances. Not to mention replacing the valve seals.
