I am somewhat confused as to the operation of a hybrid, but understand it to basically be that the running engine charges a battery which then runs the car-or something like that?

That being the case, does the battery or whatever is charged, wear out like a laptop battery does? Will it lose capacity over time, and you'll get less mileage?
