Default 2001 SL1 and remote starter

Is a "transponder" needed for the ignition on this car in order to be able
to use a remote starter on it? I see a 3 terminal connector right up next to
the key, I can get it to start and run for a
second and then immediately shut off. If I start it with the key, unplug the
3 term. connector, shut off the car, THEN remote start it, it will start ONE
time.
I'm at my "wits end" with this thing. I don't know if it's a security
feature of some kind on the Saturn, or if my remote starter module is
intermittently not working.
My Saturn is a 2001 SL1 5 speed standard.
Any help is GREATLY appreciated.

Thanks
Snyde

Default got it working

Does anyone know what the 3 terminal connector on the ignition switch is for? I couldn't get a remote starter to work with my 2001 SL1 with it connected. When I used the remote start with it connected it would start running and then immediately die. Once I unhooked it, it starts and runs every time. I now have a "Service" and Security" lights on my dash. Does anyone know anything about that switch device?

Small dinky little connecter right at the ignition cylinder? Fairly flat? Chances are this is the connector for the Saturn Passlock System. Part of the theft deterent system built into the car. You will likely have a time and a half getting by it. See if the instructions with the remote start have anythng say about it. Try talking to some professional installers to see if they are able to help.

Yep, fairly flat, that's it. Passlock system. See, I bought this car at a used car dealer, it was a leased vehicle, and there is no owners manual with it, so I have no info. on anything. I was able to bypass it by just unplugging it. Some deterrent, NOT. Only problem with this is that I now have 2 lights on my dash because of it, "Security" and "Service". I can live with that though, if necessary, 'cause the remote start works great.

By "pulling the plug" you have disabled the passlock system giving you the SES and security lights. Check with local stereo stores who also sell and install remote starters. They'll be happy to sell you a bypass module that will work with the OEM system and your remote starter. Some require an extra key for the "box" some just splice right into the OEM harness. Either type work fine and let the remote starter do it's thing without the lights. You can find these modules MUCH cheaper online...cartoys4everyone.com, bulldog etc...sell them for about 1/3 local retail prices....if you don't mind waiting for shipping.
