Default 96 SL2 Possible Transmission problem

Hi,

I am new to this forum, and quite frankly don't know much about cars. I've had a 96 SL2 for 3.5 years now and love it. However, I just recently ran into my first ever problem! I am looking for advice here. There's no way I will be able to fix anything, but I don't want to get ripped off with buying a new transmission, if thats not the issue.

I have a manual transmission. Yesterday morning I was driving my car, and I heard a cl-clunk, as if something snapped or broke. Ever since then when I am in first of second gear, my RPMs don't rev the way they should. I was in first gear going about 40 MPHs without realizing it. Same holds true for 2nd gear.

The car is semi driveable, and 3rd, 4th, 5th, and Reverse all work fine. The gearshift also leans to the left inside the car.

Any ideas what happened?

Is this a transmission problem, or something with the shifter or gearbox?

A response ASAP would be nice, I was supposed to be taking a long trip this weekend, and I need to know whats going on!

Welcome to the Board.

Where was the noise from? Inside the car or from the engine compartment. Something on the shifter inside the car may have broken. Check the shifter cables where they attach to the trans. One of the holdin clips may be missing from one of the cables.

If you are not familiar with car repair it may be worth while getting the car to a Saturn service center and get them to diagnose it.

Thanks,

I did take it to saturn, and it was a broken clip for the shifter cable.

Problem resolved
