Default 97 sw1 key will lock door locks but won't unlock?

I have a weird situation, I did a search but didn't find anything related.

I have Non power locks, and from the outside of the car, on the passenger side the key will lock the door. but will not unlock it.but it will lock it. And reverse that for the drivers side it will unlock the door but won't lock it

is this the way its meant to work or?

Thanks for any help
J

Welcome to the Board.

Is the key not turning to lock/unlock the doors or does it turn and not do anything?

If you are handy and wanting to DIY then removing the outer door panels will give you the best access/look at the door latches and the rods and levers that are likely causing the problem.

Have you tried to lube things up with WD-40? May free something up.

Just a thought,

Do you have any other keys?

Have you tried them, and do they do the same thing?

It almost sounds like the key is not fitting the lock properly.

I have had duplicate keys made that would work when turned only one direction, but not the other.

If it is the only key you have, is it an original?

If not, you may want to talk to a locksmith. Since the problem is with BOTH door locks, I would tend to suspect the key rather then the locks.

I put 5w30 oil on key and tried it and it didn't free anything up however I will try today maybe sitting all night got it to work..

oh and thanks for the welcome the search button is in for a beating lol

CAmos, i agree its not sitting in the lock right, and I would guess its not the orginal, as it does not say saturn on it, it is however the only key we got for it..

as soon as some extra money comes my way I will check out a locksmith

Thanks

OBTW,

I came across this add on Flea-Bay, of course your ignition lock would no longer match, but this might be a cheap fix.
