hehe bro, i was reading the post on satfans about the guy with the trip meter, now i know you were trying to describe how the vss and the odometer are not related when the trip meter fails, but the way you described it kinda was confusing the TRIP METER ABSOLTULEY IS RELATED TO THE ODOMETER AND WHY IT FAILS, there are 3 little gears in there, when you hit the trip meter it breaks the one gear that RUNS BOTH THE TRIP AND THE ODOMETER. for sure for sure my brother, we have rebuilt dozens of these units.
when you hit the trip meter it is almost guaranteed to take out the odometer eventually, most pre 95's failed with well under 100k
but hitting the trip meter WILL BE THE DIRECT REASON AS TO WHY THE ODO'S NO LONGER WORKING.
we have HUNDREDS of saturn guage clusters pre 95 ALL BROKEN, ALL SET AT 000, open them up, and wah la, the one red gear that spins both the odo and the trip is directly the point of failure.
ps, you can tell the guy we have both used ones that are working and his best bet is to go with one of our rebuilt models. we use a heavier solid gear whereas saturn used a hollowed out planned obsolenesence tiny POS cog.

Hey I'm no technical writer...I though the post after that where I said "If the REGULAR odometer not just the TRIP odometer was not working, the unit was shot" cleared things up somewhat though. I was only trying to explain how the speedo can work just fine, but the odometer be broken. Did you ever find a source for the BRASS gears?

hey wolf, no, the brass fittings your thinking about we made for the shifter cable linkages, me and ox did succesfully make a couple but interest waned.
people made jokes about if we were to charge 50.00 to save people 250.00 so we said **** it.
but for the odo's we DID find and do use a solid plastic gear, now, what happens is the saturn ones ar enot only flimsy to begin with them bastards HOLLOWED OUT THE PLASTIC even more! sum*****s dude, totally planned obsolesence, total bull****.
and of course they designed it so when their hollowed out flimsy POS gear breaks it takes out the odo too! i knew what you meant it just the way you wrote it sounded like they were unrelated, carry on solider!
