| Not sure if you could drain most of it through the filter hole or not. One way or another, I'd recommend finding a way to get that drain plug out, or you'll never get it to totally drain without a major ordeal. |

| At many auto service centers, there is a machine that hooks up to your transmission cooler lines, and replaces all the fluid with the action of the transmission's own oil pump.
However, it certainly will cost more than working on the transmission in your driveway.
On many cars, the transmission has no drain plug, so to replace the fluid, the pan must be dropped, and the the gasket must be replaced, as well as the filter, if the transmission has one.

| And what would be wrong with doing just that? The filter probably needs to be changed anyway so I say go for it |

| only on the manuals do you have to drop the pan. the auto's have a nice little drain plug, just like he said, and mine was also stuck. i happened to have one of those socket sets with the teeth on them to get rusted and stripped bolts off and that works, but you can also use PB blaster and smaller and smaller wrenchs (that you bang onto it with a hammer to force it to grip), that also works.

| I have a manual
I'm pretty sure I've changed the tranny fluid
I'm pretty sure I didn't have to drop the pan
*shrug* I could just be out of it tonight. |

| The S-series manual has no pan. Drain plug to change the oil.
The S-series auto has no pan that you need to remove to change (a portion) the fluid. Use the drain plug to drop about 4 quarts of fluid and change the filter.

| jon don't be a jerk *checks other posts, glares*
secondly, i don't know about the mannys, cause i have a manual, and i'm not sure if the change in years has anything to do with it, but for mine, i simply took out the drain plug, drained the old, changed the filter, and filled it up, just like an oil change.
and i'm pretty sure my haynes manual shows the 'pan' being dropped and a new gasket being applied to change the manny fluid i could be wrong |
