As was stated before, a leak has already occurred for you to ask why the a/c isn't cooling anymore. Unless you have x-ray vision no one can visually see refrigerant leak since its normal state is a colorless gas. However, refrigerant oil will leak out along with the refrigerant and the oil will leave its calling card for identification for anyone looking for the source of an a/c leak. Try reading this; http://www.saturnfans.com/forums/showthread.php?t=80107, it may help you understand a/c systems.

Being the new kid on the block, I'll thread lightly... but reading this post, I need to ask:

Is this a DIY forum or a place where people constantly tell you to not work on your own car? We all realize that things can be dangerous. I can be dangerous to cross a street, but if you're careful it is ok.

So is there a way that we can tone down the "leave it to a pro" and tone up the ideas on how to solve a problem?

Ugh.

This is a DIY forum with some people that do this kind of work for a living and many that would be capable of doing it for a living. It would not be right for those that know the ins and outs of things like an AC system to not let people know that there are dangers to working on them.
I don't think that anyone has come right out and said that people should not DIY.
I have likely come close to that but is it wrong to warn people? Especially when you see this.

How dangerous is it to do this? One of the manual states various ways you can die while doing this while the other states nothing really, lol.

i myself will not touch a/c. i work at a dealership, and i would have them do it, or my uncle (he does all my cars for some beer) Its not hard to screw it up (as you have seen here). So you would be better off just paying someone to do it. IMO
