Default Cleaning Throttle body and Intake manifold

What is the best way to clean the TB and the intake manifold. I have seen that some cleaners say to spray in there with the parts still on the car? I have been told that the parts should be taken off instead. Does this mean I have to get new gaskets, or should the old ones be reusable? Also, any reccomendations on cleaners? Or special procedures I should watch for?

Thanks
Robert

For the TB, you can either spray the cleaning stuff in there and then scrub it with the TB attached, or off the car. Its easier to clean it better if its off the car.

The the intake manifold, I dunno how you plan on cleaning it. Other than the first 2 or so inches near the TB, you can't reach inside there.

You usually just spray in the cleaner while the engine is running, and constantly open and close the throttle plate so that the car doesn't stall out (the car will sound like it is stalling, but when it starts to sputter, open the throttle plate and give it some gas. This does an okay job of cleaning it. If you want to keep it clean, you can use a PCV catch can (don't just disconnect it).

I was going to try to pull/push a rag or shop towel through there after spraying it with some cleaner. Would this work (with some effort)? I dont see why it wouldnt, just need ot figure out how to get the towel around the corners.

I looked at the back of the throttle plate and it has a layer of grime almost at thich as the throttle plate itself (I may be exagerating a little, but not much!)

Any reccomended brands of cleaners I should use?
