id say go for 2.25 unless u plan on turbo/supercharger/NOS in the near future

if youre going to gut the cat and have a straight through muffler (out the back) and you want to keep the backpressure, dont go over 2 1/4" ...anyone run 2.5" pipes on their car, if so what was the setup and how did it run

what state do u live in ..regarding the gutted cat

you could buy piping online, or you could just have it done at a muffler shop, just call a few places and see what kind of prices u get, unless u got access to a lift and u wanna do it urself

Gutting the cat is technically illegal in all 50 states. However, some states (and some areas of states) don't test for emissions. Also, keep in mind the fact that a gutted cat will result in a LOUD car. Check the noise laws in your area and then ask around and try to find out how strictly enforced they are.

2.5" is way too big for a 1.9-liter engine. That's what I run on the Mustang and what most other muscle car guys run on big displacement V8's. Muscle cars generally only step up to 3" pipes in full race or turbocharged applications.

Also, with no cat and even 2.25" pipes, you're going to lose a lot of backpressure. That means sacrificing low-end torque, which is something a small-displacement engine can't really afford to lose IMHO. I'd say go 2.25" if you plan to use a power adder (2.5" would work nicely if you're going to turbo it), but if you're staying N/A then I'd say just stick with 2".

I agree that it is important to know the emissions laws of your state, and the car has to have a cat to be sold (new, by the dealer) under federal law.

But as far as....

I can tell you that there is almost no change in the noise level.

(I expected it might, and was pleasantly surprised when it did not)

It sounds a little bit deeper, but I can not tell a difference in the noise level.
