Default Fan fuse blowing

After a 4 hour trip on a 95 degree day with the A/C on, I noticed the temp gauge climbing higher than normal. Finally it hit the red mark and I pulled over and noticed the fan wasnt coming on. So I bought another 30 amp and it popped right away. I was still another hour from home so I bought a 40 amp just to get me home. It lasted about20 seconds and POP. The A/C seems to surge from cold to not so cold or even warm sometimes shortly before the fuse blew and now it still does. Its still the origonal refridgerant from 95 so Im sure low and thats the problem. But I have no idea what would be causing the fuse to blow.

For the last week or two the temp gauge has been reading 3/4 ALOT. It has been 95 and humid for a couple weeks now, so Ive had the A/C on and running down the highway to and from work it reads 3/4 even down the highway...?

I replaced the ects a year or so ago, but Im not noticing any of the problems I had back then.

I could just run a switch for the fan, but I think Im having a bigger problem perhaps.

And all the searching didnt help me much. Any thoughts? Thanks.

If the fuse is popping right away then you have a sjhort to ground or the fan is toast. Check the wiring at the fan and back. Quick test is to unplug the fan motor and see if the fuse blows. If no then you likely have a bad fan motor. Have you tired to spin the fan blades to see it they will move? MNot a definitive test but you may have debris blocking the fan from moving.

Ill go check the ground and connections. The fan does spin freely, that was one of the first things I checked.

Thanks.

Well it does not blow fuses when unplugged, blew another when I plugged it in. Why the hell do they have to use them big 3 dollar fuses?

So do you tink I should install a new/used fan or try installing a switch?

$45+ for a new fan motor, ouch! Prolly try u-pull for a used one.

If the fan motor is fubared then installing a switch will not do you any good.
Another thing to try would be to direct power the motor to the battery. If the motor is bad and the cause of the fuses blowing then the wires would get very hot quickly and the fan motor would not work well if at all. Distinct possibilty of a good spark show when touching wires to power it up.
If you are able to hit a wrecking yard for a newer motor the go for it.

Thanks for all your help Ssicarman.

I replaced the fan motor with a used one from a junkyard. The fuse doesnt blow anymore and the car runs at a good temp. Its amazing how the blown fan motor fuse allows the car to run warmer and not allow the AC commpressor to run as it should.

Thanks again!
