Default fuel tank level gague

1994 sl2

So the past 2 fillups in my car I drove it until the needle is on E. When I get gas I can not put in more then 9 gallons. My manual and wikipedia says that my car holds 12 gallons of fuel. How do I fix my needle? Do I have to drop the fuel tank and mess around with the floater (if it has one? ) because I really don't wanna do that

My GF's 97 sl2 with a rebuild engine does the same exact thing.

when the needle is on E, has the "low fuel" light come on yet? The low fuel light comes on at about 2 gallons yet, and the needle is normally already on E by then. It's just a safety buffer. It's not good to run the tank too terribly low anyway - it makes the fuel pump's job difficult, and could shorten its life.

Low fuel light did not show up in the S-series until 97.
Unless you have played with something in the instrument cluster your potenial problem is at the fuel sending unit in the fuel tank. It is on the side of the fuel tank and there is every chance that the sending unit only comes with the fuel pump. It may opnly be an adjustment of the level sensor but fuel tank stiil needs to be dropped and the pump needs to come out.
So it all depends on how much this bothers you.

Ya there is no low fuel light. I will just deal with it... if my fuel pump starts dying I will try to do it then. I don't normally wait until it is that low on fuel. Usually fuel up when there is 1/4 tank left.

Man dropping a tank is not a fun day for me

Its normal. Both SC2's i've had 97 and 02, I can wait till the low fuel light comes on and can only squeez 9.5-10 gallons in. Its a two gallon reserve so that you dont burn up your fuel pump.

Yep, my car would only hold 10 gallons from E.
