Default Are head gaskets expensive?

I thought I read somewhere that somebody blew a head gasket and it cost him like $800 to get it fixed. That seems like a lot for just a gasket. How hard are they to change yourself, if it hasn't been damaged?

It is not the gasket that is expensive, it is the labour that is expensive.

So would I be able to do it myself, or does the engine need to be out to do it? I don't think I am having problems with mine, but I could use the info for future reference. After all, I almost have 160,000 on my car. Are headgaskets supposed to be changed regularly (like maybe every 100K)?

The head gasket is one of those "don't fix it til it's broke" items. Pain in the butt to tear your engine apart plus you have to be incredibly anal with the whole installation procedure (torqueing sequence, cleaning block, etc.) to get a good, durable seal which is why it is so expensive to have someone do it. Personally, I've never had one go on one of my cars in several decades of driving older cars.
