Default HEAT!

Ok guys, my car has always ran a little hot--I asked my dad about this and he said maybe we should check on a new thermostat(the cheapest alternative). I have always blamed it on the fact that the 1st gen SC2's dont even have a grill--or anyway for air to get into the engine.

Last night when I was leaving the football game, just sitting in line to get out of the parking lot--the engine heat rose all the way to 3/4 until the radiator kicked in and knocked it down to 1/4. I dont know why it got so hot just idling, its the first time it has ever done that. Have any suggestions?

Thanks

My '93 SC2 does the exact same thing. According to Saturn it's perfectly normal.

Personally, I'm going to eventually have my cooling fan engagement temp set a bit lower. Until then, I just avoid idling in one place too long or use the AC to keep the cooling fan running when I'm in sitting in traffic.

I used to always worry about my 95 overheating cuz the needle would edge its way up to 3/4 mark. but recently I trusted that my fan really did work when the needle went up that high. And i found out that it was true that my fan wouldn't turn on until just past the 3/4 mark. I know it kinda sucks, but once it kicked in, that needle was down to 1/4 in about 2 minutes. Don't worry, it is just a normal operation. You could always put in a radiator additive to help keep the engine cooler. Some people use Redline Water wetter, and there is another brand, but i forget.

Because their is no moving air, the engine will get hot when in stop and go traffic or just sitting around. Don't worry too much about it.

Mine does the same thing. I think it's pretty normal. I left the car outside on a hot (95) day and when I came back out less than 2mins later it was about a hair away from 3/4 but after about a 1/2 mile of driving it was back to 1/4.

Ok, thanks guys

I talked to my dad about this after I posted and he told me it is perfectly normal too. Guess I am just too quick to jump to conclusions.
