Default Help with tire size

I recently bought a set of 17" wheels with 205 40 17"s tires.I was wondering what other size tire can I run without having any trouble?

I would like to something that is not so low profile,I mean gee wiz these thing looks like forklift tires, and they ride like it too.

I could really use some help.

There's a reason the car comes from the factory with 15" wheels

How close do the tires come to rubbing now when the steering is at full lock.

you could try going to a 16" rim with a set of 205/50r-16 tires. that would smooth things out a little and still look good. if you're going wider with your tires, you have to be really careful because they may rub your strut. you should be able to run a 225 tire if you have a +35mm offset on your rim and stock struts (not coil-overs). you may need the wheel or hub spacers, but those are easy to install and fairly inexpensive.

i believe the stock rims for most saturns have around a +42mm offset or more, which is not good for big tires. the lower the offset #, the bigger the tire you can fit. BUT, there also comes a time when the tire is so wide that it rubs other things besides the strut tube.

also, the more offset you have on your rim, the more stress it puts on your wheel bearings. that's why saturn uses a conservative +42mm.

be careful, take measurements and also realize that tires are like shoes, just because they say what size they are on the outside, don't mean they're gonna fit the same as another tire with the same size stamped on it. all tires are a little different. choose carefully...

i was next to a redline quad today, and there is WAY to much space in the upper wheelwell above the tire. because of the kit you can't really drop it, but my GOD, put something bigger than a 16 incher *or whatever chrome wheel it comes with* on there!

SHEESH!

Well I've been checking around and looking at other tires, being that winter is just around the corner,I'm going to put the stock wheels and tires back till April or so.

I measured the height of my stock tires, which are 195 60 15"s and they are taller than the 205 40 17"s by about a 1/4 inch. The width is pretty close to the same, but the 40" are a little bit wider, not by much though.

This leads me to believe I can run a 215 45 17 for they are a little bit taller than the 205's and just about an 1/8 " taller than the 195 60 15's so I should be good to go.

I'll have plenty of time to make up my mind, whats left of it,which size to run.

Stock wheels and tires are ok,if you like the stock wheels and tires. I personally like to give my vehicles a little personality and character.

You can go here instead of doing the math: http://www.miata.net/garage/tirecalc.html

Default you can run

with 225/40/17's (made by Nitto). got them on mine with 17x7's, no wheel offsets needed, plenty of clearance,.

looks great, no clearance problems, handles very nicely.
