Default Joe C...or somebody

I was wondering if I would be able to retro-fit a 92 motor to my 96? Would I have problems with the ECU'S (obd1 vs obd2) or could I just swap it out no prob? Also take into consideration I have the 01 tranny... I'd don't think the bolt pattern changed but...
All I got from Saturn was their wonderful *read* response of "the 92 and 96 motors are different... they are different internally... it's a different motor... that's all I have here."
Well Thank You Saturn Expert Tech.... don't know why the hell I even wasted my 5min. w/ them, they should be on Crank Yankers!
So any way the reason I'm asking is my boy has a 92 collison he said he'd sell me for like $200 and I was thinking I could freshen up the motor so I can swap it out and have a second motor (the 96) to start my build up. If this won't work what about an 01 motor? would I need the motorolla ecu and wire harness for that too? or could I plug and play w/ that one? Thanks for the help.

its all BS josh the 96 will DROP RIGHT IN and your harness, pcm etc will run it PERFECTLY, some year swaps are easier then others, matter of fact i was going to post in a minute a note to wolfman about the subject over on satfans about a guy going from single to twin.
but your drop is easy, thats ALL BS about obd1 and 2, it makes NO diffrence, the engine is NOT diffrent internally none of the bs thats been spread about even 91 not being able to be changed out because of pcm and crank issues is wrong, once you fire up your new engine its the sesnors job to read back to the pcm, the pcm does NOT know what year engine it is internally nor can it tell, it can only read feedback from the sensors.
(which are all interchangable, now, for your swap you dont have to change squat, but on some later years such as 99 and up you simply put your sensors from an early one onto the newer block, which are all the same and all parts bolt up, cept the intake of course.
one of the tricks to do say a 2000 swap into an early one is to use the 99 intake, the 99 intake will allow your injecotrs and throttle body to bolt right up, 3 bolts for the injectors, two for the tb .
but, now im off track and confusing you, go for it, the years you mentioned are DIRECT swap. NOTHING is needed to be changed.

Cool so I don't have to worry about having problems w/ any of the sensors on the 92 motor being different than what I already have on the 96... just pull the motor from the 92 and drop it in right? Sounds like a plan to me. Now another thing Joey whats the best way to swap the motor out w/o having a lift? Can I pull it from the top or would it still be easier to drop the craddle?

since its a 5 speed car you do have to drop the engine/cradel combo, on some auto jobs we will pull them out the top (for anyone attempting to do this it is NOT easy, the crank pulley and numerous other steps must be taken for it to lift up and out.
now on ANY swap the trick is to LOOK at the sensor plugs on any year, if ANY are diffrent you simply swap your sensors into the block BUT, as far as i recall when we do a 96 engine we dont have to change the sensors.
the bod1 pcm will run everything just fine but you do have to drop the engine cradle to do this job properly.

Hey. C'mon, Joe...you don't have to drop the cradle. I pulled mine three times out the top. It's a little more work, and the tranny comes with it, but you can do it if you want.

true true, but with a 5 speed i can personally, NOT my guys, yes i still do work with them, drop one in less then two hours from start to finish, ya know, i never did a "timed" run but maybe one day when im feeling good for the ****s and giggles ill do a drop and roll and time it.
yes it can come out the top but its ALLOT easier to jack the car WAY up on jackstands, as high as they can go, put a jack under the engine/cradle/trans combo, and then lower it and pull it out the front when working with no lift.

Ok so what if I went w/ the 01 motor? Joey you said I might need to use the 99 intake so I could use my injectors and TB... Would I be able to use my 96 intake for this as well? other than the TB injection is there any other obstacles w/ the newer motors to worry about? And my 96 computer should work w/ the newer motor as long as I swap out the sensor where needed right?

I did mine from the top...it was a pain but you can do it. You have to slide the trans as far to the divers side as you can, and it helps to have a jack under the trans so you can get a better angle so the clutch can slide out easy. The trick is finding the perfect angle for the engine so it will clear on the passenger side.

The basic engine should be the same and it will go in with no problems. The main concern that I would see is that they have changed the electrical connectors and some sensors/sending units over the years and the injectors have changed some as well. If i were to try some thing like this I would swap over the intake/ exhaust manifolds and all of the sesnors. Then you know that every thing will connect up the right way.
