Default Major oil leak

Hello, I have a 2001 sl1, 1.9 SOHC. I have a major oil leak coming from what appears to be behind the motor(near the firewall), right above the exhaust, the oil is dripping onto the exhaust and burning pretty good. Oil is also dripping onto the botton of the motor and transmission case. Anything specific I should look for (like known problem areas)?. At this point I am hoping the thing lights on fire and burns to the ground so I can just get the insurance money for it and buy a Toyota (ie. something that won't break in 30,000 miles)

Any help would be appreciated. if its something cheap and easy I guess I will fix it. But for something with only 30,000 miles and just 6 months out of warrenty this is pretty sad. I did some searching and found out about cracked heads, or maybe a broken oil sender?

Thanks in advance,
Bryan

Yeah the filter is fine, the oil leak is coming from more the drivers side of the block than the pasenger side.

Out of warrenty on time or miles? No real know causes of major oil leaks. The valve covers will leak after a while but usually not big time. Any chance of an oil spill while filling the oil?
May be time to get the engine shampooed and then track the source with a clean engine.

It's out of warranty on time, last october was when the 36 months ran out. I am still well under the 36,000 miles, but Saturn doesn't care about that.

I am going to check it out this weekend but it's looking like it's time for a new car. Pretty pathetic when you think about it.

Default Check valve cover

I was getting EXACTLY the same type of symptoms with my 94 SC2 after the cam cover was off. It was such a major leak - and I mean MAJOR - running off the engine when I parked it and smoking like an SOB - that the mechanic figured he had really messed something up. Turns out he just didn't clean the surfaces well enough on the block and cam cover. He pulled the cover off again, cleaned the surfaces and re-did the seal with RTV and all is well. At least on my SC2, pulling the cover, cleaning the surfaces well and re-sealing is really only a 1 hr job max. Might be a better place to start than the sales lot with a car leaking oil badly.
