Your blow the engine up story got me thinking. Possibility of # 4 below.

MIL Service Engine Soon Light On with DTCs P0300 and/or P0301-P0304, Engine Misfire #97-T-30B - (Jan 6, 2003)
(MIL) SERVICE ENGINE SOON Light On with DTCs P0300 and/or P0301-P0304, Engine Misfire-DOHC (LL0) Engines (Install Service Calibration and/or Repair as Required). Due to revisions under Claim Information, this bulletin is being revised and supercedes bulletin 97-t-30A, which should be discarded.
1996 - 1997 Saturn S-Series vehicles equipped with DOHC (LL0) engines

Condition
Vehicles equipped with DOHC (LL0) engines may experience the malfunction indicator lamp (MIL) (SERVICE SOON telltale lamp) ON with DTCs P0300 and/or P0301, P0302, P0303, or P0304.

Cause
Misfire DTCs can be caused by a number of conditions. Several of these conditions are addressed in this bulletin.

1--Electrical - ignition secondary, mechanical or fuel system component(s) malfunctioning.

2--Misfire caused by cold-start spark plug fuel-fouling or misfire DTCs setting inappropriately during non-catalyst damaging events, (calibration).

3--Some lifters and valve spring combinations not allowing the exhaust valves to close properly during initial start-up.

4--Deposit build-up on exhaust valves guides and exhaust valve stems, causing the exhaust valves to close too slowly during engine warm-up and hot driving conditions.
