| My seatbelts are out to kill. Hello everyone.
Just recently, my seatbelts have been trying to go on murderous rampages. So far, they have been unsuccessful in strangling there victims. Two of my friends in the passengers seat have both been attacked, and this afternoon the seatbelts turned on me (the driver).
Once you release the button they are fine.
I'm referring, of course, to the motorized seatbelts in my 1993 SL2 which are, on occasion, becoming more tense as opposed to loose when you open the door. The only way to save yourself is to press the red buttons. What can I do to repair this?

| well i have a 93 sl2 and what causes this is when you or your passenger opens the door while the ignition is going off.. so they stop in place.. yah it sux don't ask me why they did it like that.. 2 of my friends were strangled to death by it... =( i miss them... but at least my satty was unharmed =)

| For the tightening problem, this is most likely what happens.
The driver, that's you  , uses the brakes too hard, making the upper body move forward, therefore making the seat belt lock up.
When the passenger rests back in the seat, sometimes the seat belt doesn't retract far enough to release the lock.
So, when the passenger tries to get out of the car, the motor is trying to pull the belt from a fixed position, instead of a free position.
The motor slows, the belt becomes tight, and it creates unneccessary force on the passenger.
There are a couple ways to fix this.
1. don't hit the brakes so hard.
2. check the seat belt to make sure it moves freely before getting out.
That's all I can think of.

| As a preventative measure, I'd also relube the mouse belt tracks with white grease...the neglecting of this little preventative maintenance step is the #1 causative factor of mouse motor failer...an expensive fix.

| hwen they are acting whacky for no good reason its usally the seatbelt control module located under the parking brake under the console, youd be amazed at what runs through that moduel, we had a car come in for a seatbelt repair, after we did it the car kept running with the key off! tried the ignition, still ran, UNPLUGGED THE ENTIRE IGNITION IN MY HAND and IT STILL RAN, turns out some yahoo ran the fan hot, but didnt KNOW THE RIGHT WAY (i like running saturn fans all the time, the thermo keeps them at a perfect 1/4 gauge for emmisons controls to work properly, heat, but cool for horsepower, lots of cushion in case of an overheat situation, etc) BUT, this hack had ran it throught he fusebox and with no IGNITION in the car it would KEEP running, we later looked at his box and found it was pried in two by the hack shop and ruined, upon asking the custome rhe later told us, yeah, the seatbelt stopped working when i got the fan "repaired"! oh my god! ox almost died when i called that one and said guess what? cause YOU FIXED IT right, the seatbel;t control that is, if you unplug it the car will SHUT OFF, sure enough, a little rewering, reinsdtall his key and ignition and back on the road, another EARNED customer!

| oh yeah back to the point, if it happens for no good reason, one or both stop working etc its usually the module, when its one side going bad it will bind, make noises etc.

| OK Guys I think some of you might be a little confused...The seatbelts only go on rampages once the car is shut off and I open the doors...then the pull instead of release. Joey there are a lot of crazy wirings in saturns as I have noticed...like the fact that the stereo runs through the Chime fuse, and that if I unplug it I loose my stereo. My kill switch cuts one of the Ignition maxifuses under the hood...and if I flip the switch with the car running I'll loose A/C (actually, any internal fan), and my Anti-Lock brakes light comes on. But how do I make the fan run 100% of the time as this is something that I've always wanted to do.

| Well then, I think I knew what you were talking about.
Did my post help any?
For the fan wiring, you could connect it's power wire to the RUN wire on the ignition.
You would most likely need the fuse inbetween it.
A good question to ask would be, 'how long do the fans last this way?'

| MR: I really don't think that it's due to hard braking. I deffinitly have braked harder without such a problem, and I did not brake hard on these 4 incidents (twice with one friend, once with another, once with myself). If it were due to tight braking, wouldn't affect both seatbelts?

| By pulling you mean that they are trying to move foreward? No other wonky stuff? If this is what they are doing just trying to move foreward but not very well then a real good lube is definately in order. A light grease could be in order but I would start with something like a WD-40 that will help clean out a lot of the crap in the drive track and lube it at the same time. Once they seem to be working properly then a light flowable grease as a final measure. |
